A powerful, passionate, dynamic return by the extraordinary singer-songwiter and guitarist on a four-track EP, in which she duets with Iggy Pop, Perfume Genius, Laurie Anderson and The National’s Matt Berninger, and the first of a trilogy. Its theme explores identity as a metamorphosis, shaped and reshaped through the experience of falling in love, and inspired by Calvi’s own shift in perspective after becoming a parent. Questions arise such as: How do we reclaim intimacy? Is there something more elemental we can connect with? What does it mean to feel truly awake? Of the four contrasting collaborators, Calvi finds common ground. “They share a kind of subversive honesty. They’re not trying to please anyone. They express exactly who they are.” Each presents a strong, striking, cornerstone. God’s Lonely Man - a stomping, glam- and psychedelic rock number, duetting with Iggy Pop and haunting riff (“I wanna light my body on fire / I wanna know what is this desire.” The smoky, stylish, passionate cover version of the Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy number I See A Darkness, brings a stormy, reverberant guitar and vocals that intermingle beautifully with those of Perfume Genius, capturing intimacy beyond romance - the quiet, profound love found in friendship. Another very original interpretation comes in a rendition of Kraftwerk’s Computer Love, stripped right back with insistent drumbeat and eerie, ghostly vocals, with the profound spoken words of Laurie Anderson, capturing technology’s isolation: “Stare at the TV screen / I don't know what to do / Don't know what to do / I need a rendezvous.” And finally, comes the title track, originally written for Joanna Hogg’s film The Souvenir Part II – but previously not released, Calvi asked Berninger to join her to create a stirring new version, a galloping anthemic number about loneliness and courage in which Calvi’s voice absolutely soars. Four fabulous tracks that create goosebumps, and really whet the appetite for what will come in the trilogy’s next installement. Out on Domino Records.
