The Michigan-born, Atlanta-based golden-voiced artist returns with uplifting, classy retro-soul funk, rock and pop with an extra layer of takeoff - he plays the cinematic thematic role of a space travelling astronaut expressing how much he misses his true love on Earth. It’s a new dimension from previous releases 2014's Soul Power, 2017's Face Your Fear, and 2021's If Words Were Flowers. The album has a spectrum of lush piano-pop, space-funk struts, symphonic soul, and psych-rock elements, but it’s his powerful, pure, fabulously expressive voice that shines out in this particular galaxy, from soaring opener There She Goes all the way to cosmos cruising and funky closer Running Outta Space. In between its a fabulous journey, the darker moods of Out In the Black, the bass thrum and forlorn synthy Banh Me, the more acoustic syncopated catchy beat of Time, the 70s cinematic and R&B feel of Hard As Stone, or the infectious disco-soul swing of The Power. Later, I’m With You has a gorgeous, swooning missing-you melancholy. Felt It Inside distorts the soul groove with a crunchy psychedelic sound as if the astronaut’s signal is breaking up (“I’m racing through shadows to get back to you”), while penultimate track The Winter Soldier strips back the sound to a shivering vulnerability. A fantastic journey, oozing class and classic sounds. Out on ANTI- Records.
