Part of the Mass Appeal Records Legend Has It... series of this year featuring various hip-hop legends such as Slick Rick, here the Wu-Tang Clan member aka Corey Woods releases his first solo album in seven years (since 2017’s The Wild), with punchy classic-feel old-school hip-hop, soul and film samples, joined here in by guests including old friends Nas, co-Wu Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, Method Man. Thematically it’s broadly about the hidden bases of political and other power, his career, the state of hip-hop itself and more, it has a scattergun of sharp, creative lyrics and inventive backing tracks. Highlights include The Omerta (with Nas) (“Night of the long knives, focus, the gun toters/ The folders getting over, it's over now, eating hummus in Rovers / See tweaking, fumbling gophers, get rocked in they loafers”); Bear Hill, 600 School, Get Outta Here, Wild Corsicans, Mac & Lobster, and sharply satirical skits such as Veterans Only Billionaire Rehab. The emphasis, as per classic Wu-Tang Clan, is Raekwon and guests each taking long, sprawling inventive rap turns over a variety of loops, a formula that still has its legs in the hands of such veterans, particularly Nas’s turn on The Omerta, on a passage about the pre-colonial history of New York itself in the early 17th century. A rich tapestry of anger and articulation. Out on Mass Appeal Records / Ice H20 Records.
