Subtlety, for some, is overrated. With another shamelessly, if also ironically self-aggrandising hyperbolic title, the Swedish band return with their classic, full-on, full-fat-fun, witty, explosive, screamingly entertaining catchy, punk and garage rock packed with shouty bangers. After an 11-year hiatus until 2023’s The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, it’s always a joy to see them in full swing, especially live, but their recordings always come across like huge, loud gig. Enough Is Enough instantly slips into the loud, massive chorus, riff-tastic catchy formula feels like a return to their biggest hit, Hate To Say I Told You So. Catchy and sweary, a paeon to hedonism, Paint A Picture has a huge, crowd-pleasing chorus, O.C.O.C.D. is breakneck-speed punk, enough to induce a panic attack. The album is like a tornado of energy, heart-pumping adrenalin (and other substances) in which Pelle Almqvist is tossed with devilish delivery. Enough Is Enough is punchily angry but insanely catchy (“Everyone's a little fuckin' bitch / And I'm getting sick and tired of this / Went to the doctor 'turns out I'm sick / Sick of everybody's bullshit). Legalize Living is a slower, drum-heavy rebel-yell protest against increasing controls over society (“See me ride into the sunset / See me vanish in the sea / With explosions going off behind me / I won't take part, you know what I mean / Ain't gonna follow the law until they legalize living.”) But there’s also plenty of humour, with self-deprecatory references to the band being middle aged, but still resisting it, such as Path of Most Resistance, especially in the closer and title track with yet another fabulous video in which the band are ageing kings feasting on toadstools, watching themselves perform and ending in beheadings and album burnings. Is it some sort of farewell? Probably, and hopefully not. Majestic. Out Play It Again Sam.
