Beautiful, poetic, vivid folk and Americana about uncertainty and guilt by the LA–based songwriter, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Amelia Baker, heralding her upcoming album A Blooming Body, out on 17 July via Hen House Studios. Known for her starkly emotive vocals and surrealistic lyrics, she mixes cinematic arrangements alongside ideas drawn from traditional and experimental music. Among other recent work includes the composing title track and score for BBC’s Small Prophets, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, who also wrote, directed and starred the acclaimed BBC The Detectorists series.

Down at Charlie’s Market
they're sweeping the awnings
the cracks and the pavement
getting ready for Monday morning
The traffic and the mad dash
the hoards of metal cars
a faceless city swirling
in a tasteless bacchanal
I spent the morning
writing all the different ways that I could tell you
highballs and vodka shots
the failure in the parking lot
I felt when you told me
I had done something wrong
the door you shut in anger
your voice muffled from out there
my head underwater
as you sink into your shell
I spent the morning
listing all the different ways that I have wronged you
Alone in the apartment
between the shower and the bed
the laptop and the kitchen
locked inside your head
down to the coffeeshop
to a room full of strangers
pouring caffeine on empty stomachs
just craving a conversation
and in the present absence
uncoiling wings are told
upon a blooming body
stretching skin along the foil
there is a gaping other
In an unfolding tale
calling out for what I’ve done, and where I've gone beyond the pale
I spent the morning
down at Charlie’s Market
looking for warnings
