Best known as a bedroom pop artist on her DIY produced first two LPs, the New Yorker returns with an expanded sound of eclectic, striking synth-pop, fuelled by a sense of personal and musical rebirth, inspired by some Californian sunshine where she recorded, and referencing an escape from addictions. After the gently humorous, dreamy, opener Now I’m, the instant standout Avalanche has wriggling synths, staccato strings, strong piano chords and dynamic, breathy vocals, Fire 2 is a perky song of self-analysis: “I'm blue as a match, I'm unkempt, unattached, I'm the / Shadow of a girl who's just doing her best / I lay in my nest and I'm fat and half pretty / A hand to my chest and a view of the city.” Drink Up is a limping, lurching synth pop number about the hurdles of self-recrimination and self-deception over addiction: “White lie, I'm a little snitch, yeah / One more for the ride back down.” Mood swings and stylistic changes come aplenty, but bring variety and fascinating sounds and melodies, such as the clip-clopping rhythms and writhing synthy gurgles of of Neither You Nor I, while Trouble is catchy pop full of demon-facing: “You found me wrecked upon the shore / I'm not your sea of love.” Garden is a swooning, dreamy waltz enjoying a sense of escape, freedom and gratitude: “Out in the garden, I'm lucky again / Run with a robin and curl with the river bend.” The album ends of a punchy, cathartic mood, Stupid Bitches banging out big synth sounds, beats and an ebullient message, dismissive message: “Doesn't hurt me anymore.” Out on True Panther/Capitol Records.
