Very expansive, dynamic, experimental noise rock and dreamy shoegaze abounds in this third LP by the Irish band from Dundalk with howling distorted guitars, clattering echoes and ethereal explosiveness helped by the skilled mixing hands and ears of David Wrench. From opener Pollyanna, the word meaning a personality type characterised by irrepressible optimism, to first standout Endless Deathless, singer Katie Ball’s high, breathy, delicate voice glides like a small bird in a storm of sound - a clever controlled fusion of high distorted guitars and thunderous drums, followed by Silver going into dreamier territory, while in turn the quieter Dreamer has Ball singing” “I don’t wanna go where I can’t feel a thing / I wanna feel something / Hold it in my hand”. The other highlight is the more electro-pop We Were Just Here, which continuously ascends and descends catchy rabid octave riff jumps. Somewhere enters hazier, shoegaze territory, and closer Out of Heaven pushes the envelope further with wafts of distorted sounds like waves lapping an otherworldly shore. Like their big influence My Bloody Valentine, mixing raw energy with the dream-like, deafeningly innovative, ethereal and oddly powerful. Out on Partisan Records.
