Pulsating, highly percussive, catchy, thrumming DIY indie rock by one half of the San Francisco Bay Area duo The Dodos, in an album mostly created on his own along with some vocal contributions from Spacemoth’s Maryam Qudus, and saxophonist Forrest Day. Instant standout is A Small Act of Defiance, with strong syncopations and sax, a song about pulling the emergency brake in a time of crisis: “We’re on a fast track down to hell / Thinking it’s some heaven you built / Who will be resting on the spit / When it’s the celebration’s end?”. But the entire album is a breezy, energetic delight, from the drumming and fast fuzz guitars of opener Split Decision, the sheer momentum of Exit Forward, the snappy and crescendo building Closer or Rinse And Repeat, the electronica energy of Is This It, to the gentler but grand closing number Slowburn. Uplifting, stirring, motivating, and at times rising to majestic. Out on Polyvinyl Records.
