A minimalist, eclectic musical marriage of the acoustic and electronic in this experimental, ambient, eerily intriguing collaboration between British Four Tet musician and the ex-Lambchop American guitarist. It’s a dreamy, and often very spaced-out release, an expanding landscape of contemplative, exploratory sound, with very specific if widespread influences – Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Fennesz, AM oldies radio stations, but in particular a shared deep connection to 80s American country and folk music and artists such Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, and Joe Ely. Tyler’s guitar playing is particularly evocative and delicate across the album, with Hebden adding undercurrents of sound in a form of cosmic element to this country-ish journey. The opener is in fact a an 11-minute instrumental cover of Lyle Lovett’s beautiful and unusual 1987 track If I Had a Boat, beginning with a drone, moving into the guitar riff and then Hebden’s twitchy, interweaving electronica. Spider Ballad is a sprightly tip-toe of pointy synth sounds. When It Rains includes lengthy clean sound, electric bendy noodles and spookier moments. Timber brings together guitar and chimes. Loretta Guides My Hands Through the Radio is a short track of background sounds and chatter, until the closer Secret City blends acoustic with warm strumming and synth layering and scratchy feedback. It’s a strange, experimental, ghostly and occasionally beautiful ambient odyssey, best consumed on dark nights or in quiet woodland with headphones. Out on Eat Your Own Ears.
