Classy, catchy psychedelic rock and 60s blues grooves come thick and fast in this sixth LP from the British band fronted by Barrie Cadogan, and their first under their name since the death of drummer Virgil Howe in 2017. The band, best known for the theme song riff for TV series Better Call Saul, now feature the excellent Tony Coote on drums, with a title refers to that confused sense of sleep paralysis when you first wake up but are still half dreaming. While the Jimi Hendrix guitar sound is their staple, opener More Bad Miles Of Road actually has a particularly wildcat Duane Eddy echo, with a vivid spooky falling bass line. Little Barrie thrives on metronomically tight, syncopated breakbeats, thrumming bass lines (from Lewis Wharton) and that warm, analogue, valve amp sound on guitar with Cadogan’s high-pitched understated vocal delivery. As well as that opener, another highlight is Luggin’ Hurt, which, with Holly Quin-Ankrah and Frida Touray on backing vocals, has such infectious energy and riffing power, it’s simply impossible not to tap your feet, especially to its full 7-minute album version. Other highlights include the slower December and the wonderfully expressive guitar on Talk It But Like It’s Wanted, the chugging steam train rhythm of Wire, and the closing title track, which builds into a fabulous intertwining grooves with delicious chord changes. Timeless sounds and super tight musicianship. Out on Easy Eye Sound.
