Following 2022’s acclaimed Supernova album, south-east London’s Amy Love and Georgia South return with a third LP of banging boundary-pushing hybrid goth-rock-nu-metal-punk-hip-hop with feisty punch-the-air anthems as well as themes addressing mental health, confidence, negativity and the music industry. With an even more voluminous energy, they’ve brought in Foo Fighters/Charli xcx producer Rich Costey, with guests including former Nine Inch Nails drummer Ilan Rubin and with introduced a dash of sampling with the sound of Iranian singer Mahsa Vahdat. Visually and aurally arresting as ever, highlights include the explosive, rich harmonies of opener Glory with some strains of Muse, Soprano’s “bad bitch” confidence-boosting, rapping topped, sexy riffs with sugary pop vocals, N.O.V.A.’s full rock-rap meatiness, the richly layered dark R&B fusion of Hummingbird; self-examination of the toll of the music industry on Parallel Universe (“You loathe all the things you hide within yourself”); the horror rock of Piranha; and the rumbling pop-rock kiss-off to those who dismiss Black women artists on Monsters: “I’m not afraid of monsters, but I’m afraid of myself.” They’re a powerful, potent, explosive, exciting act who continue to bring the noise as well as nuance. Out on Marshall Records.
