An effervescent colourful, spring-like, flower-themed fusion of electronica, dance music, Chicago techno, cumbia, kuduro, dancehall, African and south American influences in this energetic release by the Stockholm-based Swedish artist and brother and sometime collaborator of Karin Dreijer (aka Fever Ray), in an LP of two different halves. The first, as in any dance orientated music, is all about about momentum, and the album is best listened to in order, from the sprightly, syncopated synthy Rosa Rugosa and rhythmic Plastic Camelia onwards. But the highlights are very much those on which he has guest vocals, from Makwande with celebrated feisty South African MC Toya DeLazy singing with Zulu words with cool clicks, as well as English; Acuyuye is a buzzy, infectious number with Colombian MC and percussionist Diva Cruz. Another lead single, Echoed Dafnino brings in an Arabic vocal from MaMan, a Sudanese singer based in Cairo. The second half, beginning with Laurel, the ninth track of the 14 is far mellower, slow and more experimental, of which Fern Valley is the most stripped back and verdant. Perhaps too long overall, and lingering too in the latter stages, it could be just as effective 30% less, but still enjoyably blooming. Out on dH2.
