After a break of seven years, the hugely influential (on Britney Spears to Dua Lipa) 46-year-old Swedish pop star returns with a new burst of alternative, electro-pop bangers, in this ninth LP, now subverting themes of romantic love in another context since having gone through having IVF and becoming a single parent. Joined by long-term collaborator Klas Åhlund and a few familiar faces including Metronomy’s Joe Mount and Swedish super-producer Max Martin, it’s a polished, mainstream-yet-quirky 29-minute blast, with highlights such as the Kraftwerk- and Daftpunk-flavoured, lush eccentricity of Dopamine, the fabulously catchy, robotic Blow My Mind (a revamp of her 2002 single) Sucker For Love (another with a Kraftwerk echo), Talk To Me’s 90s bubblegum-style pop, to the title track, which is a feisty, talky, dance-rap number all about her IVF experience, with ironic, cheeky asides such as: “Fuck a single mom, I’m not judgmental.” Closing track Into The Sun has peaks and quieter troughs, building with a rousing chorus and typifies her skill of being mainstream and yet also oddball and electronically original. The sad-banger queen is back. Out on Konichiwa / Young Records.
