Following 2023’s debut Super Snõõper, the Nashville electro-post-punk band fronted by Blair Tramel and Connor Cummins bring a super-charged, pacy, energy boosting release of relentless, clever fun, produced by John Congleton. In their world of catchiness and chaos, there’s a buzzing engine room of fuzzy bass and fiercely relentless drums, repeated soundbite-like phrases and fast, half-talky vocals driving on each track at breakneck pace in the spirit of the Ramones and British post-punk band Delta 5. But this band come with a very modern twist but with an old-school style – they even have their own video game - an breathless acropolis of car-racing and alien hunting via their website with a retro lo-pixel, Space Invaders-style arcade flavour, playable on their website. So they are a wonderful mix of old and new tech, the opener Opt Out (in reference to the option on emails) summing this up nicely, On Line also parodying internet culture, Pom Pom and Hologram starting with what sound like very early synth sounds, before launching in a frenzied, breathless speed that almost trips up itself. Company Car goes analogue in theme of fast, ironic silliness (“I got the keys to the company car / Come with me and we'll go real far / Let's take it to Planet Fitness/ Just so everyone can witness / Moving so fast with nowhere to go/ Bracing myself and getting there slow”), while previous Song of the Day Worldwide, Guard Dog, and Star 6 9 (“Star six nine, simulation hotline / Pause, delay, what did you say?/ Star six nine, simulation hotline/ Pause, delay, what did you say?/ Five four three, directory/ Amphetamine machine talking to me”), also coming with hugely entertaining videos. What just happened, you might ask, when the album is over. Twelve songs in 28 minutes? Listen again. Thrilling, pulsating, sharp, fast, furious, and a lot of fun. Out Third Man Records.
