Following their 2023 debut Vidrio, the Mexico City-based partners Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti and guitarist Hector Tosta return with another mesmeric, exciting and highly eclectic experimental album, moving here from jazz into more pop and classic rock in combinations yet unheard. Opener Lágrima del Sol combines handclaps with crashing percussion, cello swirls and a catchy melody. Gotera has machine gun rhythms with beautiful elegiac singing and string playing that occasionally churnds electrified disharmony. Escarbo Dimensiones feels like soft bass 80s pop of the Sade ilk, but then moves into entire other dimensions, rock and prog-jazz. You can never predict a style on this release because it will morph seamlessly into somethign else. Te Tragraste el Chicle utilises the heavy Phil Collins drum sound with big heavy rock guitars and drones. La Dueña has highly dramatic crying cello from Fratti and bassy metal crashes by Gotera before evolving into a Bjork-style, beautifully passionate number. Gallina degollada brings in funky drums and fabulously odd percussive sounds, while closer Alzando el trofeo is feels like a triumphant, wistful piano power pop ballad with a fabulous, classic melody. Impossible to pin down, fascinating to experience they are a truly creative and potent pair. Out on Tin Angel Records / Meat Machine Records / Unheard of Hope.
