A superbly scorching, viscerally intense, emotionally arresting new release by the French actor and ex-Savages frontwoman Camille Berthomier, joined by longtime collaborator Johnny Hostile (Nicolas Congé) in a follow-up to her 2020 solo debut, To Love Is to Live. Passionate, sexual, dysfunctional, filled with pain and difficulty, this is wounded howl of an album, stormy in its emotions, but electrifying in delivery. Guitar sounds explode like lightning bolts and snapped electrical cables in the pouring rain, and Jehnny’s voice is powerful and primal. Opener Broken Rib explodes, screams and whispers menacingly: “We Learn to breathe with a broken rib / You said I’d never dare / Punch you in a broken rib.” No Good For People has a helicopter rhythm and foreboding bass line and declares an alienating self-destructive, energy and intensity - “I’m no good for people / I wear them down… I like to tell you all the things I see / I wear you down and you get unhappy/ But I’m alive so I guess / You haven’t found a way to kill me yet / I’m no good for people/ I am too critical.” Obsession has an electrifyingly sharp guitar sound and real feel of menace. Out of My Reach slows down the pace, but not passion. The middle of the album sinks to a fascinating low-level dark thrum on I Still Believe, but then explodes half way through and the album only continues, if that seems possible to accelerate in volume and intensity, from the crashing, stop-start Reality and Stop Me Now, the stormily fierce High Resolution Sadness (“World is always a mess / High resolution sadness/ I wanna your skin on my skin/ I wanna take it all in”) while closer I See Your Pain powerful builds into a climax with unstoppably meaty power chords with Jehnny’s interweaving dynamism. A tour de force of passion and power, well worth the five-year wait. Brilliant. Out on Fiction Records.
