Relaxing, smooth, warm, and all at a uniform strolling pace, a soporific, less-is-more lo-fi approach of stripped back guitar, intimate vocals and minimal backing on this sixth LP, all recorded at home by the California-based Canadian songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. This album seems to distill his life down to everything that has gone before – plainspoken, reflective soft lullabies about life’s ups and downs. Gentle standout Holy, with its simple guitar but perfectly weighted riff, and could have come out of the Beatles White Album-era, sets off two sides - “ Miracle reveal yourself to me” and “Curse carried on forever in me”. Even more late George Harrison / Beatles-esque, Home reflects on joy of solitude. Opener Shining is a vulnerable, falsetto love song, Sweeter is bittersweet and lovelorn . There are commonly two ambiguous sides pivoting in these deceptively songs - such as the fantasy-reality interplay in Phantom - “Surely, I was wrong / Casting spells and singing the silly songs / You knew all along / Hold your love before it's gone/ Your phantom sits with me / When I'm all alone / I love you still.” Nightmare reflects on addiction, in particular smoking, which he has since given up. Closer Rooster is a simple love song to his partner: “Dimmer future / Things are looking kinda used up / Darling, I don't mind/ Long as we still got each other.” Melancholy, minimal, but oddly beautiful. Out on DeMarco’s own label, not surprisingly named Mac's Record Label.
