A provocative, feisty, self-described bad-girl, dark-femme feminist fifth LP by the New York rapper Destiny Frasqueri, with a punchy celebration of her gender, sexuality, blood and high fashion, filled with whip sharp, slick, braggadocio delivery, and referential inspiration to the films of the late David Lynch. Her musical skills are impressive, her numbers catchy, clever, polished production hip-hop-pop, taking shots at the evils of patriarchy, and yet there’s also an unapologetic shallowness frequently at play. Among the key tracks, Blue Velvet is the key Lynch number, not only referencing that film, but also Twin Peaks, and other movie references from Tim Burton to Carrie, bathing in the blood of life: “I am so disgusting, l am so salacious … I am purest evil with the sweetеst bit of fragrance … Carrie when she went to prom, stop and give me back my crown / Pigs blood when I hit the stage, bitches kiss the floor I walk on.” She does this even more on Period Blood: “I'm contradicting religion and overthrowing men / I'm praying on the downfall of politicians and many men … I like period blood, I think it's sexy / Diva cup in my guts, my bedsheet's kinda messy.” Drop Dead Gorgeous is an aggressive aggrandisement of sexuality: “Fuck a guy on his boat for the fun kind of summer / We could do what we want, get a gun kind of summer / Girlhood, girls bleed, mean girl, girl fun / Girl books, girl code, girl hate, girl love.” Gossip Girl is a celebration of high fashion: “We need more glamour in front of flashy camera / Get Getty taking angles, cocktails around piano / Femme fatale, Jacquemus, Chanel (Chanel) / Isabel Marant, Chloé, Saison (Saison).” Nokia’s confidence and self-promotion is unrelenting right the the final track ArtStar, a declaration of pride in her achievement: “And yeah, I wrote this entire album by myself in a span of one year / And I had the best time and it's the greatest album I've ever made.” Trying too hard, or admirable bullish self-respect? It’s both, but either there’s no stopping her. Out on Artist House.
