Los Angeles artist Melina Duterte returns with a first LP for six years, an absorbing fusion of indie, electronica, shoegaze and multi-textured dream pop, all about self-healing and truth-facing, expanding from a past DIY methodology to collaboration with various with guests including Jimmy Eat World's Jim Adkins and Paramore’s Hayley Williams. Cards On The Table (with Mini Trees ) is a crispy, whispery, synth-driven opener about that seeks to “lay it all out” and face up to mistakes. Float (with Adkins) a punchier but also wistful love song. Among the highlights, What You Need (with Soft Glas) is strong, catchy, but also dreamy, shoegazey number also about facing up to reality (“Back up, what you want / And what you're telling me / Doesn't matter what you mean / You can take the last word.”) Drop A is a gentler number of yearning and improvement (“I don't wanna be something we're fighting about / Can't stand if something's pulling us apart.”) Past Lives (with Williams) is a slow, stirring number of gentle power pop expanding into a powerful rock “It's falling apart / Shut down and restart / Melt off, defrost / I'm spiralling up, while Casino Stars is an understated extended metaphor of aspiration and desperation. Oddly powerful, textured, breathy indie tunes. Out on Lucky Number.
