A strong, stylish sophomore album following their 2023 debut, Lush Life, by the Australian indie-rock four-piece from Frankston, Melbourne, with rich, dynamic, staccato, strumming and lead guitar riffs and wistful, thoughtful melodic love songs with echoes of Stephen Malkmus, Yawners, Julia Jacklin, and Waxahatchee. The bright voiced lead singer/guitarist Maisie Everett, Mike Bradvica (guitar), Jimmy Droughton (bass), and Daniel "Dev" Devlin (drums) make for a tight unit. The pacy single Again and Again, with agile fiddle on top of the jangly guitars breezily captures repeated mistakes in a relationship: “One minute I was up in your head / Now you tell me that I’m wasting my breath / I said, well at least that I tried / You’ve never been the one to make up your mind.” With fabulous rock riffs and a powerfully building sound, another standout is Don’t Let Them Tell You (It’s Fair), a defiant reflection on past and present perspectives: “I see you look out the window / I know you’re close to the brink / A younger version of me / I lie awake and I think”. Another World is full of energetic yearning (“I wanna be the one that you riff with”). Extended metaphor Cinema is underpinned by rhythmic piano as well as further outstanding guitar playing. Back of My Hand has a fabulously hopeful propulsion, Hey You soars with a bittersweet regret, If You’ve Got The Time has a throbbing, rockin’ riff, and closer Price Of A Man is a catchily all about toxic masculinity and is based around two fictional characters, Paul and Robbie. Cleverly crafted songs with strong melodies and great musicianship make this them an astute first Australian signing for Jack White’s label, Third Man Records.
