The award-winning Isle of Wight indie-pop band’s second album retains all of their mischievous, quirky charm, but also an evolved muscular, punchier, dirtier guitar sound in a collection of clever love songs and kick-ass kiss-offs. Fuelled by singer-songwriter Rhian Teasdale’s love-at-first sight relationship with a non-binary partner she met in Lisbon and a new, broadening sexuality, and the added musical panache of producer Dan Carey, it’s an album that brings everything you’d hope for in a second Wet Leg album. There’s oodles of seductive sounds and lyrics, from opener CPR’s intimate innuendo to the My Bloody Valentine guitar bends on closer U And Me At Home, and echoes of Sonic Youth and meaty garage rock riffs on Pillow Talk, or the catchy, punchy Liquidize or Pond Song, it all oozes confidence and no shortage of wit. And ever it’s the delicious nuance and talky half-whispered asides that also give the band their wonderfully oddball, humorous edge, from the “man down” and “giddy ups” of the fabulous Catch These Fists, a song about unwanted male attention, or the gently beautiful Davina McCall, in part an ode to the former TV presenter of Big Brother and her catch phrase “I’m coming to get you” when contestants left the house, but now with an ambiguous sexy-scary-fun context of a relationship. Gloriously clever, nuanced fun, packed with crowd-pleasers and eccentric originality – it’s another album of the year contender. Out on Domino Records.
