A classy, colourful, beautiful and emotionally intelligent second album by the London-born artist following the acclaimed 2023 debut Voice Notes, her rich vocal tones blending soul with jazz, ska, reggae, lover’s rock, R&B and and pop. There’s something very stirring, and defiantly poetic about the lyrics of the soulful, opening title track: “Somewhere between dreams and reality/ It's a revolutionary act when Black girls dream / I been moving restless when I try to sleep/ Whispers of what the ancestors try to say to me/ I tend to dream and carve a story out of stone / Wish I could tell my younger self I'm not aloneI … I wanna paint my soul in brushstrokes / And make a gallery of teal dreams.” Wallpaper is a gently erotic reggae number, Two Steps ups is beautifully catchy with a a shuffle beat, delicate high melody and and spoken asides, Love Is Like The Ghetto brings in a smooth, easy reggae/ lover’s rock vibe, World’s Apart a serene, bittersweet love song with swooning strings, Ain’t I Good For You is a super-stylish, seductive, catchy, jazzy number with delicious delicate beats, piano and brass: “Everybody wants that first slice – everybody wants that cherry on top …”. Other standouts include Rear View, (“there’s two points of view on how we end this fight”), the breezy, wistful No Promises, Wild Things, the gentle rippling jazz of Ribbons, and the sublime Philly-style soul closer Longest Way Round. With shades of Erykah Badu and Anita Baker, Lacey’s material is maturely crafted, and her delivery timeless. Out on AMF Records.
