It’s a small pale-fawn nocturnal fox (Vulpes zerda or Fennecus zerda) with unusually large, highly sensitive ears, that inhabits from African and Arab deserts areas from Western Sahara and Mauritania to the Sinai Peninsula. But these extraordinary ears aren’t just used to hear tiny prey (they can hear even detect the sound of a mouse’s heartbeat under the sand), or the threat of oncoming predators (such as Pharaoh eagle-owl, jackals and striped hyenas), but also to help regulate their body temperature in extreme conditions. But are their any songs particularly about this fox species as opposed to foxes in general? They are as evasive and obscure as the species themselves. but here’s a small selection, though they have mainly been the subject of very simple and cheesily explanatory songs for small children, such as this :
But here’s another lesser known one, from the experimental group Spirit Spine, from the 2011, Glossolalia, and the lines: “So when it gets too hot / You tunnel like a fennec fox.”
