With strong echoes of Cocteau Twins, experimental soaring shoegaze and dream pop by the Australian singer-songwriter and musician Harriette Pilbeam, heralding her new album, Liquorice, out on 7 November via Secretly Canadian, and the follow-up to single first single, Lose It Again. Pilbeam explains: “I wrote Only One Laughing to air my frustrations with the state of the world and the position I found myself in at the time (early 2023). I wanted a rollicking song that felt like you were struggling to keep up with me basically ranting about the lack of control I felt over my life.”

Am I the only one laughing?
Don't tell me you're listening
Waste a lifetime pretending
Then pretty soon you'll beg for forgiveness
You see the only one laughing
Is the only one I've been
The only one laughing
May well be the only road out of this
When you go home will you erase the night?
When you go home do you chase the light?
Let's abandon all pretense
If only for my amusement
Would it make any difference
When we spend all our lives reminiscing
When you go home will you erase the night?
When you go home do you chase the light?
When you go home will you erase the night?
When you go home do you chase the light?
So do I give in to what's so tantalising?
I think I know the answer now
See I never knew that what once excited me
Wasn't what's meant to be
I don't got a clue, why are you
So subdued, is it something I said
I apologise for being so straight
I guess I just wonder why bother with anything
That ends up exactly the same
So why am I the only one laughing?
I'm the only one laughing
So why am I the only one laughing?
I'm the only one laughing
The only one laughing
I'm the only one laughing
So why am I the only one laughing?
I'm the only one laughing
