Striking, mesmerically idiosyncratic, alternative, dark, flute-rich Irish folk by singer-songwriter aka Ronan Kealy from County Kerry, with a fantastical tale of modern madness, heralding his third album,The End, out on 5 September via Strap Originals. The album is also produced by John ‘Spud’ Murphy. As Junior Brother explains of this song:
“This opening track on the record stemmed from my attempt at writing a slipjig – The song’s main whistle riff was the result. With this, the song mutated into quite a large beast of a yoke, the beginning of a journey into the mouth of modern madness. The lyrics were largely taken from an actual firsthand account of a man getting lost in a Fairy Fort while walking home, heard from UCD’s great folklore podcast Blúiríní Béaloidis.”
The official video, created by longtime collaborator Ellius Grace, brings to life the eerie story at the heart of the song. As Junior Brother describes it: “An older Local in rural Ireland relays the events of a strange encounter with another world to a Collector. The Collector brings to this tale his tape machine and his cynicism, but ends up immersed, and ultimately trapped, in the rural purgatory the Local Man describes. Teller and Collector become merged, within the pastoral world of the Old Man's nightmare.”

God looked down and said to me
Welcome to my mountain
God looked down and said to me
Welcome to my mountain
Then the way home lifted up
And disappeared beneath my foot,
And the ways I knew well went away.
Down I fell and in I dived
Among the briary bushes
Down I fell and in I dived
Among the briary bushes,
Down I fell from everyone else,
Away from home and from myself,
Everything and nothing closing in.
When I saw the mountain blue, I
Heard an angry ocean,
When I saw the mountain blue, I
Heard an angry ocean, I
Heard but was not listening,
And everything began to spin,
Faster until over earth I fell
Down
I am lost
In the grinder
I am lost
In the grinder
I am lost
In the grinder
Sky came down, up came the ground
Now the world grinds round and round
Down and down and
Round and round forever.
I am lost
In the grinder
I am lost
In the grinder
Sky came down, up came the ground
Now the world is upside down
Down and down and round and round forever
Lost, in the grinder
I am lost, in the grinder
Sky came down, up came the ground,
Now the world grinds round and round,
Down and down and round and round forever
Down and down and round and round forever
Down and down and round and round forever
Down and down and
Round and round and
Down and down and round and round
Forever
Forever.
