With a strong flavour of Prince, and no short of saucy, sexy, funk, hip-hop and pop bite, the American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer’s fifth album is polished and packed with catchy, clever bangers, and oodles of wit and cheeky sugar and bitchy spice across the politics and intimacy of relationships. Armed with top fellow producers Jack Antonoff, Kurtis McKenzie, Sounwave, f a l l e n and Stavros, highlights include sharp, fast-rapping opener Cards, the candy floss pop of Jealous Type, the hilarious take-no-shit AAAAH MEN!, which samples the theme from the TV show Knight Rider with added fabulous funk beat and vocals, the very Prince-y and 80s sax-flavoured Strangers, in which, from the video, you really feel the tongue is also in cheek and there’s a lot of humour going on here, this a excellent entertainment. “How do you attract a man?” comes a posh English accent at the start of the R&B soft-sheen soulful All Mine. “Grab him and take him!” comes the answer and Doja, aka Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini has no qualms about doing just that, though there are also hints of an open-mindedness and sexuality at play here too, with cheeky, half-rhyme lines, such as “So kiss me like your mirror, eyе me like a queer”, on Stranger, and slick, oddball, mischievous ironic braggadocio details such as: “5'10" and I don't even need a vodka soda / Call me over to watch some White Lotus / And after maybe we could rearrange the sofa / I need a man with a sense of humor / Beliefs aligned and zen like Buddha / Got equal parts of sex and cuteness / One look in your eyes, it could execute ya / Girls can't tell that he fine off rip/ 'Cause he don't look like he like dick/ But if he liked it, I'd still like him.” Silly! Fun! is a super-catchy, woozy bit of dream pop all about being in love. Doja knows what she likes, and it’s very infectious. There’s a gushing 80s pop continuing all the way the shimmering, sharp, opulently 80s synth sheen, sax and big drumcloser Come Back. Oodles of popcorn both salty and sugary, but very tastily more-ish. Out on Kemosabe Records/RCA Records.
