The Led Zeppelin singer, after successful albums and touring with collaborators such as Alison Krauss, completes a project started in 2019 with a covers collection of traditional folk, blues, Americana and other sources, working here with singer Suzi Dian, and tight band comprising Oli Jefferson, Tony Kelsey, Barney Morse-Brown, and Matt Worley. Like a good whisky, it is finely distilled, with these mature, nicely balanced reinterpretations of material by artists from Memphis Minnie and Ed and Lonnie Young (Chevrolet), Moby Grape, Blind Willie Johnson (Soul of a Man) The Low Anthem (Ticket Taker), Martha Scanlan (Higher Rock), Sarah Siskind (Too Far from You) and a particularly fine rendition of Low’s Everybody's Song written by the Alan Sparhawk and the late Mimi Parker. To his credit, instead of resting on his Led Zep elder statesman laurels, Plant keeps on digging deep in the soil and roots of music history, and his renditions and collaborations, these recorded in the Cotswolds and Welsh borders, make for sweet sounds and authentic, harmonious results and an infectious love of these timeless numbers. As well as the Low cover, which has a dash of Kashmir about it, other highlights include the fabulously vivid banjo-flecked opener Chevrolet, a delicate version of Moby Grape’s It's a Beautiful Day Today, the Johnson classic Soul of A Man, the catchy, shuffling country, bluesy Higher Rock with great harmonica soloing, and an atmospheric, rich vocal harmony, traditional closer Gospel Plough.
