Passionate, powerful, dynamic indie rock in this sophomore LP by the Chicago-based quartet that gallops forwards with a driving momentum, some elements of early PJ Harvey and Radiohead, and is produced by John Congleton. The band features vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan, drummer Bailey Minzenberger, and for this album also guitarist Korgan Robb, and bassist David Fuller. Kapetan’s voice a high, resonant, tremulous tenor above fuzz guitars and a pumping backline and . Opening tracks Guess, Still Around are punch-the-air passionate, the latter the first of three that reference modes of transport, and really working up a head of steam: “Pile up interstate and we're in a rush / Driving on state-to-state like we're on the run.” Alice is a gentler, reflective number, Certainty also as a piano ballad, and Hot Air Balloon rises with a soaring, emotive escapism, Seven Degrees a powerful, personal acoustic, wistful singalong about ties and degrees and separation. The title track captures a rising optimism building to a voluminous, psychedelic conclusion. Finally, Dear Bicycle, referenced in the album artwork, begins with a tender but insistent piano accompaniment and fuelled by a sense of childhood memory, rises and soars to an emotive climax. A band with a capacity for dynamic shifts and emotive power, they could be heading for great things. Out on ATO.
