Sumptuously slow, simmering, smoky, bittersweet new soulful single by the Leeds-based trio of Josh Crocker Tom Henryand Joe Harris, joined on vocals by the British-Canadian singer-songwriter, out on Play It Again Sam. Regarding the lyrics, Maltese explains: “This song reflects on the life someone very close to me had, and the choices they had to make because of it. Sometimes there are things we can do to make our lives better, but sometimes the hand you get is just a bad hand. And the helplessness that brings for those around them is a difficult thing to accept. The notion of a bad hand in life made me think in turn of flightless birds.”
No sense in the night
It's in the family blood
And it's hard to reconcile (yes)
With the thought she was
Hope you didn't feel a thing
I don't know why
You had that light
Some stars don't shine
Some birds don't fly
Doing that thing on your own
Now I don't bear thinking of
When you hide it with a stone
While the truth hits like a rock
Hope you woke up smiling
I don't know why
You had that life
Some stars don't shine
Some birds don't fly
And I remember your August coat
But I never saw you wear it
And who knows why you had to die?
Some words don't rhyme
Some wings don't work
