LA’s beloved veteran brothers and international treasures Ron and Russell Mael return with their 28th studio LP , filled with various styles of their pioneering pop, new wave, art-rock, chamber, operatic – various amusing, mischievous, satirical, trivial and declamatory, dipping into subjects such as branded backpacks, tattoos, and performative devotion. Out on Transgressive Records. Lead single Do Things My Own Way includes the use of the word epistemology and the phrase “Howard Hughes in Jordan 2s”. Mixing the light and heavy, A Long Red Light appears to a silly, repetitive one be about waiting in traffic, but is really a song about thwarted desires and dreams. Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab may well inspired by the modern-day parable of fake German heiress Anna Delvey aka Russian fraudster Anna Sorokin, who came to the public eye in the TV series Inventing Anna: “Will you visit me in Rykers?” But among the highlights is the catchily daft JanSport Backpack, the tenderly funny My Devotion (“My devotion to you / Is about all that I do / Got your name written on my shoe / And I'm thinkin' of gettin' a tattoo”), the bitchy but bittersweet Drowned In A Sea Of My Own Tears, or the cutting number about shallow conversation in A Little Bit of Light Banter. Light and heavy, silly and serious, a little crazy but plenty catchy. It’s not their very best LP, nor their worst, but Sparks still have plenty to lighten the heart and entertain the ears. Out on Transgressive Records.
