Southend-on-Sea twin brothers George and Jack Barnett return with their fifth album and first in six years - with a striking, otherworldly experimental fusion of rock, classical and electronica, with guests including Caroline Polachek and veteran jazz bassist Chris Laurence. It’s also co-produced by Bark Psychosis pioneer Graham Sutton who worked on their seminal album Hidden and Field of Reeds. A continuation of the imaginary musical world they have been creating together since childhood, Jack describes this latest LP: “It starts with a boy soprano singing from underground. Someone said to me it’s like he’s rising up and taking you on a guided tour of all of this filth and heaven, life and death, humans and machines, moments of intensity and moments of stillness. All these contradictions. Then he returns back where he came from in the last track, back under the earth, back to silence. I didn’t mean it to be that, but I like that idea.” Those first and last tracks Waiting, and the tenth, Return, make for ethereal, beautiful bookends, coloured by church organ, but in between there are also plenty of dramatic and cinematic moments, including dynamic standouts A Season In Hell, Industrial Love Song (with Polachek), I’m Already Here, the dark, mysterious Wild Fields, and the title track. A late-night listen with trumpets, bells, piano, other orchestral instruments and occasionally explosive percussion, it’s a gentle, otherworldly, psychedelic-ecclesiastical, experimental adventure. Out on Domino Records.
