Songs of the Day: Wings of Desire - Better Late Than Never / Choose A Life

August 3, 2021 Peter Kimpton
David and Chloe of Wings of Desire

David and Chloe of Wings of Desire

With a band name echoing the title of the Wim Wenders film, and a momentum that echoes early Arcade Fire, these two tracks from the forthcoming EP Amun-Ra, capture a sense of time passing and self-discovery, and our automated programming which tells us to make a happiness checklist. Of the latter, Choose A Life, which comes with a Super8-film video with multiple moments, the band says that that “once we’ve acquired the material check list we will be fulfilled, but this is never the case. The song explores finding joy in the smaller moments of the everyday, the mundane, those micro expressions that we take for granted. And realising that you don’t have to bend the world to make your mark. That it's better to just enjoy it."

Wings of Desire are ex-members of INHEAVEN, Chloe and David, and more of their work can be enjoyed via their website. Amun-Ra is out on Friday 13th August 2021 on WMD Recordings.

There’s a million people I want to be
There’s a billion places
I’ll never see
But I'm just a loser, I'm just a creep
If there's something else happening
Nobody told me
Oh I hope we get married and live by the sea
And I’ll drive a motorcycle
And watch our kids sleep
But success is a miracle
That nobody can reach
Won’t you help me find a god I heard he’s out in the street

We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
I'm just getting older
Guess I’m just getting older

Yeah I’m lost in America
Call the police
Cos my body's failing
And I cannot sleep
Yeah I am a criminal
Cos I'm not 23
And there's kids with guitars again
And they’re younger than me
Sometimes I sit down and wonder
Where I thought I’d be
Now I look like my father
And feel like a priest
Oh won’t you let me start again
Just set me free
Someone help me find a face
Like the ones on T.V

We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
I'm just getting older
Guess I’m just getting older

I’ve been waiting a lifetime
To satisfy my needs
Man put down your weapons
And come with me
A cigarette I light
To make me feel like a king

And I won’t resist or fight
I’ll just lay down and sleep
You sound like your mother
Last night she was in my dream
I felt like an angel
The twisted one you see
And I don’t care what I watch
As long as it's for free
And when we’re old enough to drink
Maybe you’ll come round for tea

We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
We’re just getting older / We're just getting older
I'm just getting older
Guess I’m just getting older

What will it be
A home or a prison cell?
You cannot make it right
If you don’t even love yourself
You say you’re fine while you drag your last cigarette
Then tell me that I’m crazy and go on about that book you read
How I miss the sound of the city
Where the kids stay up all night
And the drugs are real shitty
You moan about your friends and how they freak you out
But when you get older you’ll miss having them about

Choose your life
Get a job
Find a wife
Fuck it all

Choose your life
Get a job
Find a wife
Fuck it all

Don’t wanna choose a life
Won’t you give me time
Don’t wanna choose a life
Somebody give me time

Remember that time we flew to Berlin
I said I loved you
And you smiled and grinned
So hopelessly pretty I said one day we’ll win
A trip to the heavens
Where we’ll dance and sing
At one of those parties where everyone’s wasted
I really can’t be arsed to leave the bed
Don’t let me face it
Your jokes make me laugh
And my songs make you cry
We’ll lie here forever
And aim for the sky

Choose your life
Get a job
Find a wife
Fuck it all

Choose your life
Get a job
Find a wife
Fuck it all

Don’t wanna choose a life
Won’t you give me time
Don’t wanna choose a life
Somebody give me time
