A weirdly wonky hot sensation on social media, the mysterious Quebec duo are instantly recognisable by their oddball, masked polka dot disguises, but this second release of mostly instrumental prog-rock bendy loops and riffs between guitar and drums remain just as mesmeric in their musical skill and complexity. Naming themselves simply as guitarist KHN de Poitrine and drummer Klek de Poitrine is part of the surreal appeal, particularly when seen live, which is why their shows sell out so fast. Musically the strange magic comes from the use of microtonal math-rock structures, non-standard tuning systems, complex polyrhythms, Khn de Poitrine playing a bespoke luthier-made double-necked hybrid instrument consisting of a Fender-Stratocaster-like guitar and bass, separately wired, and each with additional microtonal frets. There’s something of the nerdy skill of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard as well as Frank Zappa, with a twist and they’ve also called themselves a “Mantra-Rock Dada Pythagorean-Cubist Orchestra”. As performance artists, that very singular look, particularly the proboscis monkey-type nose, is dottily magical, and clearly humorous, their name in French meaning the heart-related medical condition angina pectoris. A translation of their thinking explains that: “By awakening the notes sleeping deep in the cracks between the piano keys, these two incongruous beings with large papier-mâché heads will make you feel an auditory stimulus comparable to the delicious and aching tightness that precedes a heart attack.” After Vol. 1 in 2024, their recorded live session for KEXP at the Rennes Festival in December 2025 (see below) has particularly sparked a frenzy of interest. With just six tracks in other 37 minutes, but enough to hook the listener in, especially with the opener and former Song of the Day Fabienk and second track Mata Zyklek, but it’s hard to stop all the way to last track Angor. Self-released.
