Emotional, beautiful, stirring, Americana, folk and indie-pop by singer-songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona, in this latest studio LP in of soaring voice, strong melodies, love, vulnerability and heartbreak, longing and brave recovery. Written during a period marked by profound loss, emotional upheaval, and uncertain new beginnings, the songs emerged during a dark chapter of her life as Andrews navigated the near-death of a loved one, the end of a major relationship, and the intensity of a new romance. That turmoil is palpable in her songwriting and dynamic range and delivery, mixing devotion and defiance, and it’s no wonder that in her two-decade career she’s attracted comparisons with Linda Ronstadt the songwriting craft of Lee Hazlewood, and some of the 80s pop sounds harking back to Fleetwood mac. Co-produced with Jerry Bernhardt, there are rich arrangements and carefully integrated synths sounds as well lovely weighted percussion by Grizzly Bear drummer Chris Bear, from soaring opener Pendulum Swing all the way to closer Hangman. Particular highlights include the swooning Keeper (I'm a keeper of your heart / I'm a keeper of your secrets / I'm a keeper in the dark/ I keep it all together until it falls apart”); the slow burner Everyone Wants to Feel Like You Do; the intimate, protective, vulnerable Cons and Clowns (“It's a scary world full of cons and clowns / A lot of bad people who will tear you down”), the gentle guitar thrums and old-school synths of Only the Best For Baby; and particularly the bittersweet, melancholy, delicate farewell number, Little Picture of a Butterfly (“After all that time went by / All I get is a butterfly / A little picture of a butterfly / Guess that's your funny way of saying goodbye.” Classy, old-fashioned, but timeless, musically powerful and heartfelt. Out on Loose Future / Thirty Tigers.
