Following his 2024 release as Caribou with Honey, Canadian composer and musician Dan Snaith returns as his other moniker, the dance/electronica and instrumental side with a selection of fun experimental sounds loosely evocative of the gently fluttering insect. It’s as much a set of loopy musical sketches as structured songs, a dashboard clever ideas mixing riffs, samples and genres. Opener Sad Piano House does as exactly described – a melancholic piano composition mixed with house beat to create a euphoric swing. Oddly, in a somewhat closed loop act of meta-music, he metaphorically collaborates with himself in the catchy repetitive whoops and loops of clubby track Waiting So Long as guest vocalist Caribou, because of his unwritten rule that he does not sing on Daphni tracks. There’s plenty of play on style, from the whooshing minimalism and trap of Talk To Me (with cat video), the the simple, trippy skip beats and doodling bass of Clap Your Hands, the itchy, syncopated synth-house of Shifty, the wriggly electronica of Caterpillar, Two Maps’ jingly complexity, or Eleven’s insistent single keyboard note across a wave of shifting rhythms. Lucky meanwhile has a ghostly reminiscence, with faint dub echoes of the fabulously quirky music for the hotel drama TV series The White Lotus music, composed by the award-winning Chilean-Canadian Cristobal Tapia de Veer. Infectiously housey, catchy beats and ideas, deceptively simple, and clearly the product of a man really having fun in his home basement studio. Out on Jiaolong.
