After a decade away, a welcome, warm return by the revered, charismatic, golden-voiced neo-soul and R&B singer, songwriter, actress, and poet from Philadelphia, with a new full-hour collection of smooth, jazzy, funky, heartfelt, positive, defiant and uplifting numbers with a selection of guests. A talent undimed, Scott shows her substantial range, variously singing with passion and dynamism, rapping, gospel, soul, spoken word, and generally philosophising about life with an excellent band. Instant first standout is the punchy, positive Be Great featuring swirling orchestral sounds, backing singers and the brass of Trombone Shorty. Beautiful People brings a smooth, gorgeous, gentle jazz-funk and Philly soul, and her effortless vocalisations. Norf Side brings her slickly bring pull-no-punches feminist braggadocio rapping alongside Tierra Whack and produced by DJ Premier. Pay U On Tuesday jumps out the surprise with sweary, N-word ant-racist, dirty brass and piano old-school blues, preceded by a disclaimer. Former Song of the Day Pressha has a smoky, woozy, keyboard jazz-chord vibe. BPOTY (featuring Too $hort) has catchy Afrobeat and hip-hop and examines different ways women are exploited whether through religion, prostitution or the health industry. Meanwhile Don’t Play and To B Honest bring simmering, slow soul, while Right Here Right Now goes more into bouncy RnB pop. As she signs of on the smooth, gentle Sincerely Do, Scott shows she’s still a very classy act. See also the recent Tiny Desk concert below. Out on Blues Babe Records / Human Re Sources/ The Orchard.
