Catchy, funky, witty, insightful and candid soulful indie-pop debut by the London trio fronted by Nicole ‘Lux’ Fermie, with songs inspired by a formative first queer relationship and subsequent exploration of identity. The playful and luxuriantly slow opener Poly-Amerie tells the story of a love triangle, three women who are trying to be romantically open while keeping their jealousy at bay: “You’re the only one for me, Poly-Amerie … until I find someone else.” The funky syncopated groove of Both Teams also comes with droll, clever lyrics: “I don’t want to the fight. The one that we’re not having. Things that you don’t want to hear. I just end up saying … the kids that you don’t want to have I just started naming …” Another standout, Hot Mess, has a chugging rhythm, soaring guitars and high, soulful vocals morphing into breezy yacht-rock adjacent number that captures a Pacific Coast Highway and the sensation of reliving your passionate teenage years as a result of rediscovering your sexuality . Can You Want It has an engaging acoustic, melodious with a country feel. Snacks (I Could Love You) has another delightful soul groove and beautiful synth ripples, an experimental sound that goes even further in the gently ethereal History of the Body. A new encounter in the workplace fires up the slow, simmering Couples Therapy, while there’s a 60s pop swing to Opaque & Hollow, there’s orchestral 70s soul panache in Thief and closer I’m This Time is slow, reflective ambience. Alongside drummer Howey Gill and bassist Nathan Ridley, Nicole Fermie is an undoubted presence – stylish, experimental, and entertainingly honest, this makes for striking, eclectic and original release. Out on Bella Union.
