Following 2023’s Dogsbody, a second album of strikingly innovative experimental, staccato, percussive, post-punk by one of the most exciting bands around - the Brookyn-based quartet of vocalist Cole Haden, guitarist Jack Wetmore, bassist Aaron Shapiro, and drummer Ruben Radlauer. While New York has produced many innovators, Model/Actriz can be regarded as a new landmark, mixing disco with noise punk, with the beguiling, dynamic vocals of Haden and particularly the extraordinary sounds created by Wetmore’s guitar. As bassist Shapiro puts it: “everything is a drum”, with shards of extraordinary sounds coming from all quarters interspersed with Haden’s camp, homoetoric whisperings, fantasies and expressed insecurities. Preluded by opener Vespers, in particular Cinderella is an extraordinary single of thumping, cacophonous, ticking, explosive, thunderous sounds, the lyrics inspired by an abandoned fantasy to have that fairytale themed birthday party as a five-year-old. Poppy is a machine-gun like dark, number of clanking ecstasy. There’s all sorts of wit in the wild sounds, and in lyrics Haden has many amusing moments, such as on Diva, declaring: “I’m such a fucking bitch, girl, you don’t even know … Just imagine me absolutely soaked, dripping head to toe in Prada Sport.” Acid Rain is a more peaceful, and beautiful, slower groove with finger-picking. Audience is a clattering heart-racer with guitar sounds that sound a bit bin-banging steel pan beore Ring Road, surely the most deafening, chaotic, and brilliantly anarchic. Doves also whips up frenetic energy that builds and builds into a series of dynamic quiet-and-loud sections. Closer Baton sees out the album with simmering, mysterious distortions and lyrics about a long-term relationship. Superbly stormy yet strangely intimate, utterly exciting and truly original. Out on True Panther Sounds/Dirty Hit.
