A warm, beautiful, gently witty, if melancholy, species-themed standalone single by the acclaimed American singer-songwriter taken from the same sessions as her 10th album, Goodbye Small Head, out on Bella Union. It is accompanied by a video shot by JJ Gonson featuring Ezra accompanied by an assortment of birds, lizards and myriad other species. Ezra mischievously describes the song: “This is a jaunty back-porch breakup/depression song about feeling so bad you’re not sure what species you even belong to anymore. We left it off Goodbye Small Head because it was too good. It’s better than Jason Aldean. Better than the Barbie movie. Better than Bob Dylan. Better than Mike’s Hard Lemonade. Cue the sound of one hand clapping, a Zen round of applause.” Ezra Furman is about to embark on a winter tour. To explore and enjoy more by Ezra, see also the other embedded links below.
When you’re known far and wide as a wizard of words
But you spend all your time with the lizards and birds
And you don’t make a sound and you don’t have a thought in your head
Well the moon gets heavy and the night gets blurred
And you don’t crave affection from the wicked world
You prefer the scales of justice and the feathers of bed
I just can’t look into the eyes of any living mammal
When my blood’s running this cold
I turn the music up so loud it erodes my teeth’s enamel
Keep one hand free for the other to hold
We’re the last two members of a dying race
When I said the wrong thing you threw your drink in my face
And the stakes are total extinction, but that’s just as well
For if the world’s survival depends on love
And that’s just the resource that we’re running out of
Then baby you can eat shit and die and I will see you in hell
I just can’t get comfortable with our fingers laced together
When you’ve got retractable claws
I’d like a little time offstage but the show goes on forever
Keep one hand free for a Zen round of applause
