Unfolding with a quiet intensity, layered guitars and restrained urgency, this latest single about loss and shock by the Bath/Bristol indie dream-pop/ shoegaze band is a striking way to announce their recent signing to Venn Records. It’s produced by longtime collaborator Peter Miles (TORRES, Orla Gartland) and mastered by Simon Scott of Slowdive and accompanied by a video directed by Matthew Deeley. The band are begining a UK headline tour this month, before joining Lush’s Miki Berenyi on select dates this winter. It follows their 2024 debut EP No Place To Land.
Lyricist Meg Jones describes the song in more detail: “Submarine is about loss - the song likens it to feeling as though you’re submerged at the bottom of the ocean, unable to focus fully on what is happening around you. It grapples with the shock of feeling as though your world has fallen out from under you, and finding metaphorical shards from the wreckage which trigger surges of grief (when life seemed to have more meaning). It reflects on how you feel as though you are constantly living somewhere between reality and this underwater realm, and the waves of emotion are always waiting for you when you least expect them. It also comments on how people who have experienced loss will often notice it in others.”

Waters of thought like choking
a TV screen is blurring
near and now far, the depth charges
buffeting me with memories
Submarine, my
Submarine, my
It’s on her face, it looks like mine
she knows this place, stifles sighs
guilt-ridden, the ground felt hard
then dropped, I held up shards
in corners, a record I bought
with reason
Submarine, my
Submarine, my
endlessly

Undone by nights that gleam and glean
strange how it’s always here waiting
the sudden stab of waking
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
Submarine, my
Submarine, my
endlessly
change this sequence
in between
