The Scottish post-punk/indie rock band return with a powerful new single about grief, love and mental illness, their first in six years, with guest Robert Smith of The Cure on guitar, and out on Rock Action Records. The Twilight Sad are now a officially a duo of frontman James Graham and guitarist Andy MacFarlane.
Graham says of the song: “Waiting for the Phone Call is about grief, love and mental illness. These things took over my life and I became ill. I lost the person most important to me in one of the cruellest ways. I’ve always used writing as a method of processing and coping with my emotions. My emotions became a problem and I couldn’t control them, writing music with Andy… especially the past seven years had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life. We’ve all been waiting on a phone call that can change our lives at some point. This unfortunately focuses on a phone call that you never want to have.”
The Twilight Sad’s last studio album was 2019’s It Won/t Be Like This All the Time. The band is expected to release a new album in 2026. To explore and enjoy more by them, see also the other embedded links below.
I'm sitting in the front seat, head in my hands
Waiting for the phone call, telling me, are you gone?
I'm sitting in the front seat, head in my hands
Waiting for the phone call, telling me, are you gone?
There's a pain in me no one can see
Gather round and come die with me
Watch me die
Watch me die
No goodbyes
No one can hurt you now
No, no one can hurt you now
Dreaming
Well, you must be dreaming
There's nothing to say for you
There's no turning back
Do you love mе?
Watch me die
No one can hurt you now
No, no onе can hurt you now
There's a pain in me no one can see
Gather round and come die with me
Watch me die
Alone in the dark
It isn't easy
So lay me down to die for another sleepless night
Watch me die
No goodbye
Watch me die
I'm sitting in the front seat, head in my hands
Waiting for the phone call, telling me, are you gone?
You make my heart cry
You make my heart cry
You make my heart cry
You make my heart cry
You make my heart cry
Dreaming
You must be dreaming
There's nothing to say for you
There's no turning back
(You make my heart cry)
Dreaming
You must be dreaming
There's nothing to say for you
Alone in the dark
It isn't easy
But do you love me?
It isn't easy (You make my heart cry)
But do you love me?
